Where Have You Been All My Life?

Reflection By Michael W. Jackson · 4 min read

On self-love, individuality, and the quiet revelation that the extraordinary person you admire might be the one looking back at you.

Have you ever encountered a special person who seems to “checks all the boxes” for you? This person could be a friend or even someone that becomes your partner for life. How do you feel when you are in the presence of this person? If you hear their voice, read their message or you see them, it is like the warmth of sunshine enveloping you. The chaos or stress of whatever was happening up to this point fades into insignificance. If I were to ask you what is it about this person that causes you to feel this way, perhaps you might even have difficulty explaining it. Yes they possess qualities that resonate with you but any effort to articulate these qualities would be inadequate compared to your feelings.

Now I would like to challenge you to try something new. For a few moments close your eyes and visualize this person that creates those feelings of happiness. Take your time and allow yourself to be in the state where whatever happens next with this person fills you with positive expectancy. As you are fully immersed, see yourself standing in front of a mirror and slowly open your eyes.

As you see yourself in the mirror, ask this question, “where have you been all my life?”

The special person that you believe is absolutely incredible could just as easily be you, the person looking back at you in the mirror. The person you encountered which caused you to pose the question initially was a real person. This person is special in your eyes and similarly you could be seen as special in eyes of someone else. You are their ray of sunshine.

Looking in the mirror and asking ourselves, where have you been all my life, allows us to see ourselves in an entirely new way. Imagine feeling good about yourself because of who you are. Besides being special in the eyes of someone, you can be special for yourself, a ray of sunshine for you, coming from you. I am sure many people would not see themselves this way. It might be viewed as bordering on arrogance or conceit. I think we need more self-love. We should love ourselves more frequently and more deeply. The ability to genuinely love another person begins with a love for oneself.

Unfortunately, what seems so prevalent in society today is the need for validation outside of ourselves to give us a sense of self-worth.

Our individuality is slowly being eroded so that people more and more are beginning to look like everyone else and follow what everyone else does. This perspective is self-limiting and in order to tap into your unlimited potential, you have to look within. Use your imagination and discover the person you want to be. When you find this individual within yourself, you will already be in own unique way, the best YOU there will ever be. Where have you been all my life will no longer apply to you, for you are here now and your life going forward adds new chapters to your greatness.
